What is Respite Care/STA Short-Term Accommodation?

Respite care is a form of short-term temporary support for individuals with disabilities. It allows their primary caregivers a break to focus on their own well-being or other priorities, while ensuring the person they care for receives high- quality care and professional assistance in a safe and supportive environment. Respite care can occur in various settings depending on the participants needs and preferences.
Types of Respite Care
In-Home Respite – Care is provided in the participant’s home. Professional carers take over duties temporarily, ensuring a familiar and comfortable environment.
Short- Term Accommodation (STA) – Participants are cared for in respite accommodation, community centre, or other approved homes in an individual or shared group setting.
Emergency Respite – Immediate care available during unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or emergencies affecting the caregiver.
How it works
Duration – Typically, the NDIS funds up to 28 days of STA per year, which can be used flexibly- for instance in blocks of up to 14 days or one weekend a month.
Inclusions – STA funding generally covers personal care, accommodation, food, and agreed upon activities during the stay.
Accessing STA through the NDIS – Review your NDIS funding plan to ensure it includes Short-term Accommodation under the appropriate categories. Consult with your Support Coordinators, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or Early Childhood Partner, to determine the best approach to include STA in your plan.
