Respite Care/STA Short-Term Accommodation

Respite care is a form of short-term temporary support for individuals with disabilities. It allows their primary caregivers a break to focus on their own well-being or other priorities, while ensuring the person they care for receives high- quality care and professional assistance in a safe and supportive environment. Respite care can occur in various settings depending on the participants needs and preferences.
Types of Respite Care
In-Home Respite – Care is provided in the participant’s home. Professional carers take over duties temporarily, ensuring a familiar and comfortable environment.
Short- Term Accommodation (STA) – Participants are cared for in respite accommodation, community centre, or other approved homes in an individual or shared group setting.
Emergency Respite – Immediate care available during unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or emergencies affecting the caregiver.
How it works
Duration – Typically, the NDIS funds up to 28 days of STA per year, which can be used flexibly- for instance in blocks of up to 14 days or one weekend a month.
Inclusions – STA funding generally covers personal care, accommodation, food, and agreed upon activities during the stay.
Accessing STA through the NDIS – Review your NDIS funding plan to ensure it includes Short-term Accommodation under the appropriate categories. Consult with your Support Coordinators, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or Early Childhood Partner, to determine the best approach to include STA in your plan.

Supported Independent Living SIL

SIL is a service designed to help people with disabilities with higher needs live as independently as possible, typically provided in shared housing with other NDIS participants, though it can also be available for those living alone. SIL provides help or supervision with daily tasks aiming to promote autonomy and improve quality of life. Sil funding does not cover everyday expenses such as rent or groceries.

Skill development – Opportunities to enhance skills for independent living.
24/7 Assistance – Support available throughout the day and night, including overnight support.
Shared living arrangements – For individuals who enjoy living with others and benefit from a community atmosphere.
How it works
Typically, two to seven NDIS participants live together in a shared house or apartment.
Each participant has their own private bedroom, and the common areas (e.g., kitchen, living room, bathroom) are shared.
Homes are designed to be accessible, safe, catering to the unique needs of the participants i.e.: wheelchair access, assistive technologies.
Each resident has a personalised plan based on their NDIS goals and needs.
Some services such as household cleaning or overnight supervision, may be shared among residents, making support more cost effective.
Participants often share responsibilities, such as meal preparation or household chores fostering teamwork and independence.
